We are very excited about our new RETINAL LASER SCANNER in Leigh on Sea. A harmless laser scans the retina resulting in an image of the surface similar to a photograph and will also measure the thickness of the retina at the macula to aid in the early detection of macular changes, including macular degeneration, and around the optic disc which can give early indications of glaucoma. The diameters of the veins and arteries are also analysed to check for signs of raised blood pressure. It may be necessary to use drops to increase the size of the pupil if it is too small. If this has to be done you will not be able to drive for 5 hours afterwards.

- MACULAR DEGENERATION - AMD or ARMD
Macular degeneration is a degenerative condition of the macula, the centre of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. This can be either WET or DRY. Whilst only 10 - 15% of those diagnosed have wet AMD this is the type that can be treated and - the SOONER treatment is received the better the outcome. The RTA scans the macular and measures the thickness of the retina aiding in the early detection of any changes.

This is when damage is caused to the NERVE FIBRE LAYER of the retina resulting in loss of vision. It is normally detected by LOSS of VISUAL FIELD or RAISED PRESSURE.
The RTA scans the nerve fibres and can detect thinning of the nerve fibre layer BEFORE any loss of vision.
