This is when damage is caused to the NERVE FIBRE LAYER of the retina resulting in loss of vision. It is normally detected by LOSS of VISUAL FIELD or RAISED PRESSURE.
The RTA scans the nerve fibres and can detect thinning of the nerve fibre layer BEFORE any loss of vision.
Because an image of the retina is produced as well as the measurements of the thickness this process will aid in the detection of any changes to the retina - for example diabetic retinopathy or changes due to hypertension ( raised blood pressure)
