All children up to the age of 16, who are registered with a GP, are entitled to an NHS sight examination once a year. Under certain circumstances the examination can be more frequent.
If a child needs glasses he or she will receive an NHS voucher - and we have a range of frames and lenses which are provided free of charge with this voucher. Of course, if you would like a different style of frame or sunglasses, for example, these are available at an extra cost.

There is not a specific age at which a child should come for his or her first test but it is generally agreed to be around the age of 3 or earlier if there is any family history of squints or other problems. Of course, if you have any concerns - DO NOT DELAY - it is much better to be told there is nothing to worry about than "if only you had come in earlier".

It is not necessary for a child, or anyone else, to be able to read to have an examination. Reading the chart is only a small part of the examination anyway - it is also important to check that the 2 eyes are working together and to check the general health of the eyes. For those who can read, the letters are an easy way of assessing the standard of vision but for young children we have special picture charts or will ask them to match letters.
